I can create the lens through which I view my world. This statement is empowering! It is a form of artistry to look through my eyes at a world containing the full spectrum of good and evil, and perceive wholesome beauty tucked into crags—in nature, in circumstance, in truth, even in people. It’s tempting to see the world as gray and dismal, especially viewed through dreary reports in the daily news. But here is Thoreau’s definition of the highest form of artistry: “It is something to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so make a few objects beautiful. It is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look.” I can choose to see the good and the beautiful in all things and in all people, because it is surely there if I have eyes to see. This is truly a REASON to REJOICE!
