Grab the Handrail

12Recently, as I was carrying our precious newborn grandbaby down the stairs in my high heels, of course I reached to grab the handrail. It was unthinkable that I could safely maneuver down the stairs with so fragile a bundle without holding tightly to that rail for support. Ours is a dangerous world, both physically and spiritually, so it is also unthinkable that I could maneuver through the landmines of mortality without holding tightly to the “rod of iron,” or gospel of Jesus Christ. Spiritual dangers include temptations, distractions, and evil influences which bombard us continually. Because we are His beloved children, Heavenly Father has given us commandments, covenants, and ordinances—as protective measures to help us successfully navigate these dangers and return into His presence. We, His children, are His work and His glory. “It is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind…it shall have no power over you to drag you down. . .because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation. . .whereon if men build they cannot fall” (Helaman 5:12). Holding tightly to the handrail of the gospel of Jesus Christ ensures safety, but it also brings indescribable happiness—yet another REASON TO REJOICE.
